Hello! My name is Rebecca, and I like to teach music! You might know me from my YouTube channel where I do a cappella covers of songs on a looping app.
I have a Masters Degree in Music from the Cincinnati Conservatory and played oboe professionally for a hot second. I also grew up in a neighborhood where everyone gathered around a campfire on the weekends with guitars, fiddles, and mandolins and jammed until the fire went out. I honestly think I gained more valuable music tools around the campfire than I did in six years of school, but my formal training allowed me to break down the "learn by jamming with friends" approach into something concrete that I can teach.
My goal as a music teacher is to give you a solid enough foundation in music theory (the building blocks of music) that when you hear a great song on the radio, you can get your instrument out and play and sing it yourself. The way I get there is by teaching you songs YOU want to learn and sprinkling the music theory on top. By the end of your first lesson you will be able to play part of a song you chose and you'll have a fun but effective practice technique that should make your homework actually enjoyable. Spoiler: your homework is almost always, "Just keep playing that song you want to play."
If you want to drill flashcards and memorize what half notes and whole notes look like so that in a few months you'll be able to hammer out Hot Cross Buns on a piano, I am not the teacher for you. If you want to make music for fun and you're willing to put in some work, then I can help you reach those goals.
Things I can help with:
*Learn to play keyboard, guitar, or ukulele (as in, google chords to a song and play them while singing, NOT play sonatas by Beethoven)
*Gain confidence with singing
*Learn basic music theory
*Play by ear
*Wanna make loops? Okay!
I also offer instrumental and vocal coaching short-term for high school students who want help with chair tests and region band/choir auditions (I was a music education major most of my undergrad and can play most wind instruments).
